Date:

Sun 27 Mar 2016

Branch:

   Ulster Branch

St. Patricks Coast Ride

Report & Results:

Wind and rain proved no deterrent to the hardy endurance riders last weekend at Shane's Castle, with a record turnout for competitive riders at the venue. The safe, traffic-free route was an ideal introduction for several first-timers and the flat going made longer distances easily achievable, comparatively early in the season.

Congratulations are in order to young riders, Emma Greer and Kirstin Thom, on achieving their Silver Shamrock Final Awards, also to (not quite so young) Colin Thom for the same reason. Anna Mulholland, Lucinda Webb and Annette Boomer all successfully completed their first Bronze Shamrock Qualifier. Riding Club members also took up the challenge in preparation for the forthcoming competition at St Patrick's Coast Ride on Sat 27th June, with Sabrina McNaulty's horse, Chocolate Chip both starting and finishing on the lowest heart rate of the day - 25 and 30bpm respectively!

Many thanks to ILDRA chairman, Neil Anderson, who (ably assisted by wife, Tasha) organised the ride and to attending veterinary surgeon, David Nealham MRCVS who had a very busy day with all the vettings.

The next Ulster Branch ride will be on Sun. 12th April at Florencecourt, Co.Fermanagh, where Pleasure Rides, together with Competitive Trail Rides will be available for members and non-members. This will be followed by teh 1st of a number of training sessions 'Going the Distance', starting on Thur.16th April, 7.30 - 9.30 at Derryhirk Community Hall, near Loughgall. These will be relevant to anyone interested in learning more about fittening and conditioning their horses and are open to all whether or not members of ILDRA.
