ILDRA get competitive season off to a great start at Tollymore

The ILDRA Ulster Branch season is now well underway with the first Competitive Trail Ride (CTR) held on Sun 12th February at Tollymore Forest Park. We woke that morning to some very cold temperatures but the forecast was positive and dry for the day. The view that greeted everyone as they got closer to the venue of Slieve Donard, with its white hat on, was quite impressive. The weather, although a little chilly, was dry all day as forecasted and in the trees the cold wind was not getting through so it was a lovely ride. The views over Newcastle and the coast as the riders climbed to the top of the park were amazing and out over the mountains at the top of the Drins the views were equally spectacular.

The day included the 1st CRTs of the season as well as Pleasure Rides with 55 horses and ponies enjoying their respective rides. The youngest rider on the day was Erin Han riding Lady. Erin was participating in her first ILDRA ride and we hope to see her, and her Aunt and Granny who rode with her, back out again soon.

At the other end of the age scale David Cunningham, a long-time supporter of ILDRA and organiser of the St. Patrick’s Coast Ride (to be held over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd September this year), completed his first 20 mile competitive ride on Helen McFarland’s C’Mall.
