St. Patricks Coast Ride

Report & Results:

The Irish Long Distance Riding Association (ILDRA) returned for their second visit to the sprawling National Trust property of Florencecourt Estate near Enniskillen on the 11th of August. Competitive Trail Riders and Pleasure Riders enjoyed the variety of trails covering the estate’s landscape, many riders enjoyed one another’s company along the relaxing route with new friends made on the day. A cooler day than the recent norm made for good riding conditions and many horses and riders took the opportunities to cool-off in the streams of the Claddagh River meandering through the forest park.

A range of trail lengths meant that there were distances on offer for everyone. Thanks go to the attending veterinarin on the day, Stephanie Bethel, MRCVS for checking over all the endurance horses. Helen McFarland, one of ILDRA’s most successful competitive endurance riders completed a 50-mile endurance ride on ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ climbing the numerous hills and traversing the rivers of Florencecourt multiple times! CTR riders and pleasure riders who chose to travel the 10-mile route were rewarded by views of peaceful waterfalls, as riders travelled back down the Benaughlin Mountain along the Cuilcagh Way views of the historic Florencecourt House were visible through the ancient trees.

Many pleasure and competitive endurance riders have now turned their attention to the upcoming St. Patrick’s Coast Endurance Ride taking place on the 7th of September starting from Downpatrick Racecourse, this spectacular ride takes in so many aspects of the County Down countryside from woodlands, gallops, endless beaches and grassy fields. Offering pleasure ride distances up to 20 miles and a range of competitive distances, this ride has something for everyone and is a must-do event. Why not gather up a group of friends and take part in the new class for 2019 of the Pleasure Ride Team Competition, simply make up a wacky team name, take part in a simple endurance vetting and ride your chosen distances, you never know what prizes and rosettes you might win!

ILDRA’s next ride is on the 25th of August at Cam Forest near Limavady offering pleasure rides and competitive rides. For further information contact ILDRA through our website or facebook page.

NOTE CHANGE OF DATE

Was 18th Aug - Now the 11th

All welcome for a great ride at Florencecourt Enniskillen, another trip to the West this year, to a beautiful National Trust property. Ride through the forest and into a Ford to cool the horses feet down and let them have a drink. Brilliant ride for all.

Ideally suited to younger children requiring adult accompaniment as it is a fairly flat ride.

Yet another reminder - ALL CTR entries must be with the ride organiser by closing date. You can enter on-line or by post. If by post remember to include your payment. Links to form and on-line system below.
